On 11th October,2015 we had a pre-season session mist netting at Site 1. We were prioritizing catching redwing, using a tape lure. We caught

Interestingly, all bar 2 of the redwing were aged as adult (not first year). More appeared to arrive during the session, and these weighed ~10g less than those caught earlier so we wondered if they had just arrived across the North Sea.

Plenty birds feeding in vegetation just down the hill. In wet weather last week a large flock had been feeding on the bait, but today was lovely.

P.S. Since this session I have checked a few times and confirmed - when the weather is wet the bulk of the flock feeds on the bait, when dry the bulk of the flock feeds in the vegetation further down the hill. I guess the habitat is good :)

This has been a very frustrating site this year. Lots of chaffinch were present before I had the catching equipment in place about a month ago. Not sure why they are hard to catch now but rodents might have something to do with it - rats under the mat and lots of grey squirrels taking feed.

This year is very disappointing across all sites, following a very poor breeding season. It is my impression that percentage of young birds is abnormally low, but things may change.

This site is particularly poor this year probably because of obvious habitat problems. Principal problem is that the wild bird cover is in poor condition and birds are only using a small part in an area wit no suitable sites for nets. The farmer tells me his plans were thrown into disarray by uncertainties surrounding the new agri-environment scheme, resulting in nothing getting done.

This will be our last session this winter at this particular location, though we may try another location on the same farm (site 2).

As in my comments on site 2, this site is disappointing this year. Birds are present, with reasonable wild bird cover and a bait station providing feeding. The bait station, where we catch, has been taken over by rodents and I suspect the birds are being deterred from using it. The rodents in question are at least one rat burrowed in under the bait station itself, and numbers of grey squirrel raiding the bait - I have seen up to five at one time.
