Today I went to south-central West Virginia to a good location for Swainson’s Warbler. It took a little bit of effort, but I did eventually find my target.

This morning I went to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia where someone found Vesper Sparrows last week. I heard one even before I got out of the car when I arrived at the location.

I'm at 173 birds this year, not a record but not the worst year list either, so far. The latest species are Sandwich Tern and (probably) Arctic Tern. Only two lifers so far (Shorelark and Collared Flycatcher), but those are species I've been trying to connect with for a very long time.

Faring rather better with mammals, having seen or heard 19, including 6 lifers.
Target numbers being 200 birds (173/200), 20 mammals (19/20), 3 reptiles (4/3) and 4 amphibians (4/4).

At Last I see a bird that I normally see in May at the lastest. In Paderborn:

161 Common House Martin
Swallows and martins were very late in Germany this year. It was kind of depressing to see only very few individuals for most of spring.

This morning I went over to the Ohio River Valley to chase a reported stork. I found it almost right away after I arrived at the location. It was a state lifer (number 272), my fourth of the year.

290. Wood Stork

There are only five previous records of Wood Stork in West Virginia and this was the first since 1973.

This morning I found a rare and early fall migrant, bringing my Year List up to 291.

291. Yellow-bellied Flycatcher

I look for this species in late September and early October, usually without success.

Dave

At the Rieselfelder near Münster, Germany today:

162 Water Rail (juvenile)
163 European Reed Warbler
164 Eurasian Spoonbill

Glad it is not just me then! We had lots of Barn Swallows though. Im heading to Langeoog in September then Sri Lanka in November/December for a round trip, so I should get more than 400 birds and hopefully break my 1000. Just 12 to go and we haven't been to SL before, so I'm hoping for 200+ lifers from that part of the world.

This morning I went to a nearby high-altitude boreal bog to look for Olive-sided Flycatcher. It’s a little early because if I do find one (and some years I don’t find any at all) it’s usually in late August or early September. However I got lucky and found my target.

292. Olive-sided Flycatcher
