My year list at the end of April ends on a nice round 100 species with 92 of those being recorded during April. This compares with the previous 3 years as follows:

Yr , list to Apr, recorded in Apr
2018 , 103 , 97
2017 , 94 , 91
2016 , 98 , 93

As can be seen, April is usually a good month for recording a high proportion of species.

Reed Warbler Survey

This year I have been asked to survey the Reed Warblers along the canal system. Over the past few mornings I have counted the following:

A38 Roman Way Bridge (Droitwich) to Salwarpe: 5 Reed, 2 Sedge
Salwarpe to Ladywood: 2 Reed
Ladywood to Bridge 5 (Porter's Mill): 7 Reed
Bridge 5 (Porter's Mill) to Bridge 4 (Mildenham Mill): 14 Reed, 6 Sedge
Bridge 4 (Mildenham) to Bridge 3 (Linacre): 13 Reed, 6 Sedge
Bridge 3 (Linacre) to A449 bridge (Hawford): 4 Reed, 1 Sedge
A449 bridge to confluence: 2 Reed

Coney reedbed hasn't yet been surveyed but contains 4+ Sedge Warblers and at least 10 Reed Warbler territories.

Tapenhall pool has 1 Reed Warbler and 1 Sedge Warbler territories.

Hawford fishing pools only very partially surveyed has 1 Reed Warbler territory

Therefore, the lower Salwarpe valley (Droitwich to Hawford) holds a population of 60+ Reed Warbler and around 20 Sedge Warbler territories.

Sedge Warbler singing in hedge along Sinton Lane - a long way away from any water - suggests Sedge Warbler migration is still going on. I had a similar record here a few years ago.
