Johan Gustafsson discovered a young bird, being fed by its hosts, in a hooded crows nest, in the grounds of the Delfinia Hotel, just outside Molivos, today
Photograph reproduced from the Lesvos Birders web site with his kind permission.

Lesvos Bird Records needed

Lesvos Bird Records required for 2016 - 2018
The administrators of Lesvos Birders (Facebook Group) are hoping to publish reports for the years 2016 - 2018, over the next year or so.
This is to build on the excellent work done by Steve Dudley from 2009 to 2015. See here to download his PDF's reports for these years.
If you have recorded your sightings on Observado.com, for these years, they will be automatically downloaded for the purpose of producing these reports.
Additional records will be very welcome and should be entered on the spread sheet referred to below and submitted to:
[email protected]
Please PM me if you would like a copy of the spread sheet to submit your records.
The full text of the article on Facebook reads as follows;
"Lesvos Birds reports for 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Steve Dudley produced the excellent Annual Reports up to and including 2015. We are now going to produce the ones for 2016 and 2017 followed by 2018.
For us to do this we need records from people who want to contribute, a spreadsheet is attached. Please use a separate spreadsheet for each year and insert your name and the year in the filename when saving. Also all records must be in English please as translation will be impossible, given the possible numbers, however the spreadsheet does allow for Scientific name, in these instances please do not use a common non English name.

Deadlines for submission are :

2016 and 2017 – end of September, aiming for production end of the year
2018 – end of December, aiming for production by end of March

All records from Observation.org have already been extracted for 2016 and 2017 so please do not send in again. Records from other systems have not been extracted at this stage. If anyone can advise how to extract all annual reports from eBird then a pointer would be appreciated, thanks.

Records can be submitted for the following :

Birds
Mammals
Reptiles and amphibians
Butterflies
Dragonflies
Insects
Moths
Locusts and crickets
Bugs
Beetles
Bees
Orchids

A separate sheet is contained for each in the Spreadsheet, please do not intermix. It will be hard to produce 2016 and 2017 retrospectively so please try and ensure the validity of your data before submission. i.e. spelling of names.

We do not have copies of the daily logs from the hotels or taverna’s for these years so again are dependant on submitters help.

All rarities should be supported by supporting information, basic notes, photographs as per any National Rarities Committee requirements.

Here is a link to species defined as Rarities in Lesvos :

Please submit all records to the following address :

[email protected]

Many thanks.

Terek Sandpiper 14/05/18 / Oriental Honey Buzzard 02/05/18

In the absence of exciting bird news ( my wife had a common buzzard and short toed eagle last week ) ,I'm posting a couple of images of star birds from earlier this year.
Hopefully return migration should begin soon.
Terek Sandpiper , Kalloni Salt Pans 14/05/18
The Terek was discovered by a party of Dutch birders in Mid May.
Surprising in that the weather was reasonably settled and the date was quite late for a Spring Migrant.
It has been just pipped at the post for star bird of the first half of 2018, by the
Oriental Honey Buzzard 02/05/18
The oriental or crested honey buzzard, was discovered by Stelios Zannetos near Mitilini , at Alifanta on May 2nd.
