Hey LazDivaz,
Here is a quick link that provides some additional information on soft part color changes. Basically, the heron is in high breeding condition, and due to changes in hormone levels, the legs brighten up.

Hola, Chris,
Thanks so much for the link. As we have in our local swamp both the great egrets and snowy egrets it will be very exciting to watch the rainbow unfold. Last year about this time we had the following nesting here, just around this time: the green heron, little blue heron, northern jacana, muscovy and black-bellied whistling ducks. And lots of other locals who may or may not be setting up housekeeping. Won't be getting much work done in the next weeks...

Not only are you in for a visual feast but for some of the most amazing sounds you've ever heard coming from birds. Here is a link to a recording of some Snowy Egrets I made at a breeding colony years ago.
