This little bird was by the hippo pond in Lake Manyara National Park in Tanzania on June 24. I would appreciate any help in identifying it.

How are you excluding Winding?

Well, I darkened one of the OP's photos to check, then compared with the book, but mainly with my photos of the two from Manyara and northern Tanzania. All the Winding pictures I had showed the bright red wing panel that you can also see in the books and a brightish red head (set off by the black back, aka Black-backed Cisticola). The OP's bird doesn't. Rattling does have a kind of reddish wing panel, it's true, but it's not 'bright' and looks quite different, I think, especially if you have both birds side by side. Also (maybe) we can see enough of the OP's bird to think the back should be blacker.

Photos: Winding (Tarangire), Winding (Manyara), Rattling (Serengeti)

My opinion: I'm willing to be corrected if, for example, you think it's a worn bird, or you have some other reason for thinking it's Winding.

Fair enough, but I wonder how faded Winding might look at some times of year, orl what juvs may look like. I was a little bothered about the bill looking a bit slim for a Rattler ....but with each passing day they become but a more distant memory!
