By 'BF' do you mean Birdforum or Bird Fair?

Sorry for the confusion, I meant BirdForum, the way Camera Land NY is a "supporting vendor".

As for Bird Fair 2020, I am guessing it's highly unlikely to proceed as planned in August given what the Deputy Chief Medical Officer said about the lockdown lasting at least six month. It looks like Park Cameras is a sponsor.

OK, please note that Birdforum and Birdfair are both just one word so the 'f' is not capitalised.
I think In Focus group also sponsors Birdfair.

I will make enquiries about dealer sponsors of Birdforum.

Speaking of which, is there a binoculars store in the UK that will stock them and is a sponsor of BF? Or failing that, of the RSPB?
fazalmajid,

I'm being inquisitive / nosey as to why you ask please. There will be many options once we get through these challenging times to handle or purchase a pair. One thought crossed my mind today is what bad luck for Zeiss to launch a much awaited new product. Also if the world financial markets tumble as predicted most of us will be significantly poorer. Will prices come tumbling down or could alpha binoculars become a real financial luxury?....this based on a consumer prediction that house prices could crash here in the UK. Back on topic, Lee's photos have fanned the dying embers. They look sumptuous.

Realistically the elite group of people that can buy a $2250.00 luxury item like a pair of binoculars are not going to be as affected by the downturn in the economy as the average Joe. They have enough cash reserves that they still are going to buy what they want within reason and if they want a Zeiss 8x32 SF they will buy it. Now they might put off the purchase of that new house or car but the economy is not going to affect a small purchase like a pair of binoculars.

I heard back from Steve, and while Camera Land NY sponsors Birdforum (and is in renewal talks), there is no such equivalent in the UK. So In Focus or Park Cameras it is.

Well, all retailers have them for the same price (£2065 for the 8x32). I might as well patronise one that supports this forum or other bird-related organizations. I am not averse to ordering from B&H in New York (they offer shipping options with prepaid customs that are remarkably swift), but in this case it makes no sense at $2865 after shipping and customs.

It's certainly poor timing for Zeiss, but I don't recall the price of cameras or optics falling much if at all during the 2008 Great Recession. As for the markets, to quote a great Brit, John Maynard Keynes, “When the capital development of a country becomes a by-product of the activities of a casino, the job is likely to be ill-done”. I was expecting house prices to go down due to Brexit anyway, which is why I am renting, not buying yet, and in any case I am funding the purchase by disposing of underutilised goods.

Lee,

Thanks for the pics, nice. If by chance you take any more photos of it again, perhaps you can include one of the X32 next to the SF 8X42.

Names with internal capitalization are not uncommon, and the usage of BirdForum is well established because it is found throughout BirdForum. In fact, scrolling down to the bottom of this page, in the lower right corner of the screen, it says "© BirdForum Ltd 2002 - 2018". Or maybe you are saying that Birdforum is a product of BirdForum Ltd?

Not trying to tell you your business, just trying to be a troublemaker :)

PS. Plus, every Google search returns the header "BirdForum - The Net's Largest Birding Community, Dedicated ..." and Google can't be wrong!

Well spotted Alexis, this needs clarification. Before I became a moderator I always wrote Bird Forum but on joining the team I noticed that a team member used Birdforum and I also took notice of the logo on the top right of the page which although not capitalised at all shows the name as one complete word and letters in the middle of words are not generally capitalised. Of course brand names don't always follow normal conventions of grammar but taken with the colleague's usage of Birdforum I accepted this form and have used it ever since.

However although the website URL says simply birdforum.net and so repeats the logo, I notice that if the Binocular page is open but no thread has been opened, the tab at the top of the page says Binoculars - BirdForum.

Clarification will be sought!

Hi Andy

Go to post 1 at the beginning of this thread and there is a pic of SF32 standing just in front of an SF42.

Here is clarification from Blue Steve which explains how the name of this forum appears in different forms on internal communications, but it also confirms Alexis is correct about the official name.

"I use all versions Birdforum or Bird Forum or even BirdForum, but on official business Bird Forum ".

So all versions are acceptable and that will teach me to keep my pedantic tendencies under control :-O

I must admit I'm a bit surprised at such available freedom. But "birdforum" (uncapitalized) isn't OK except in the logo? Ha!

--AP

Well, in the spirit of all-inclusiveness demonstrated by Steve there seems no reason to exclude birdforum when it already appears on the forum pages and anyone using it could simply be quoting the logo.

Lee, not intending to fan the flames of the "objective cover" thread, but are you able to post photos of the 32s with their objective and ocular covers? Thanks, Michael.

Even more questions on the SF 8x32 ...:king:

a. Any photos not just of the rainguard but also of the strap provided? And what do they weigh?

b. In which direction does the 8x32 focus (e.g. anti-clockwise to infinity, like any decent binocular, or the other way round)?

Hermann
who made up his mind to get the 8x32 - provided
it's optically *better* than the Nikon 8x32 SE ... ;)
