Hello Dave: thanks for keeping this blog.
Marjo and I were at the trig. point north of Knight's Grove around lunchtime today and were entertained by a group of 4 Hobbies together.....mainly just having fun(?) in the wind, but two landed in the harrowed field there for a while. Maybe a family group. A Buzzard came to look at what the four were doing, then went into a long fast glide westward on part-closed wings whereupon one of the Hobbies "took up the challenge", shot after the Buzzard in its own power-glide, overtook it with ease and "bombed" it (not sure if it actually touched or not) then speed-climbed upwards. All good stuff with our lunch.
We hadn't been up there before.....hadn't realised what a superb view you get.

Thanks Peter - yes it is a lovely spot with great views. The farmer is also a very friendly bloke who told me he is happy for people to walk around his fields (off the footpaths) - unlike the people who have taken over Knight's Grove who have put up 'no entry' signs - although I might send them an email to try and see how amenable they are to me and others carrying out wildlife surveys. Four Hobbies together is easily the best count so far this year - did they include juvs?

Green Sandpiper over Mildenham - Hawford calling.
Tree Pipit over near Hawford calling.
Coot on Tapenhall pool.

Two Mandarins flew from Hawford fishing pools.
Little Owl Linacres Paddocks.
Yellowhammer Jacob's Ladder area.
Coot on the river at Hawford.

We think there were two juveniles and probably two adults Dave; it was difficult keeping track of them zooming around. At times one or two would come down very low over the field and then it was much easier to discern colours and pattern against the dark background: certainly good views of one adult with nice red 'trousers' and vent, and probably a second adult a bit later; two birds low down together seemed to show the brownish feather edgings on top and the buff cast beneath of juveniles.

Two Green Sandpipers on the small pool between Chatley and Hawford then flew north. Tufted Duck and Little Grebe also.

Two Mandarins on Tapenhall pool.

Two Little Egrets over Hawford.
Yellow Wagtail over Jacob's Ladder earlier.
