Common Chiffchaff - (wing length well within a nominate ‘chiff’ imo) the image is too dark to assign a race confidently but it doesnt look particularly ‘iberian’ toned to me.

It's a chiffchaff - and surely there are no Iberian chiffchaffs around at the moment?

I've lightened the image (hope the OP doesn't mind - will remove if so) and all of the salient features are visible

True - notable passage from late July and through August and the bulk of them have left by early-mid September with the odd straggler into October. They should all be in West Africa I believe by now ;)

Common Chiffchaffs are quite abundant almost everywhere down here until around mid March - just when Iberians are back and installed in their specialist habitats almost exclusively inland from the coast.

I think any Iberian Chiffchaffs in the UK in the autumn are likely to be reversed migrants (?).

Thanks to all for the comments. Particularly those which advise on timings when certain species are around in the Algarve during the year. Anybody know a good website/blog that is helpful for this?
