ABA Big Year 2019 (3 Viewers)

For my first post about 2020: in addition to Hawaii being a great way to end a Big Year, isn’t it also a fine way to begin one? Just sayin’
Joe

Happy New Year, slightly belatedly, and many thanks for keeping us in the loop on this.
Many, many happy returns!

The McQuades ended up with 788+2. It's amazing what a few days of Hawaiian birding can do. 2020 could be very interesting...

There is a further update on John's blog, it seems that the number will be reduced by one as his only Black Rosy-finch transpired (whilst he was reviewing his photographs) to be a very dark Gray-crowned Rosy-finch - Ouch !!

So is anyone doing a 2020 Big Year that we know of?

Also, it would seem that China now has enough relatively wealthy people that a Big Year there should be eminently doable. It might even get official blessing, as part of an effort to highlight China's efforts to preserve its wealth of natural resources.

Amanda Damin has checked in; it'll take me a day or two to get all her species in, but here are the numbers:
ABA: 795
US: 791
Continental: 743
Lower 48: 683

You can see the updated standings here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_year

I don't yet have John's final Lower 48 total, but we'll get there.

Congrats to Amanda!

Already one been done by Tong Menxui a couple of years back now...

Thank you for that info.
I'd not known that, never saw it posted anywhere. Is there a link you're aware of?
In any case, delighted that someone has kicked the ball into play. Just hope that there will now be lots of other contestants.

I finally bit the bullet and put together the United States sheets for the first time. Yve, Olaf, Laura, John & Christian were kind enough to quickly get back to me about their Canada-only species, and I already had that info from the others.
I may well set up the 2020 forum within a few weeks, as Colin Dobson is shooting to be the youngest person to get 700 in a year.

The Stolls are off to a great start, but have not committed to a Big Year. The Deans are continuing to bird; we'll see if they jump in the pool once again. As mentioned above, Colin is off to a great start. I know him; he's single-minded enough to get to 700. I hear there's another birder out there working on a Lower 48 year.
I'm attaching the final docs for 2019.

On to 2020!

I was wondering about the Stolls, They’ve been all over the place this month, with some amazing Instagram photos under their belts.

Perhaps Joe is able to give some idea of the January ABA record. Currently, with a week still to go in the month, the Stolls with Flynn Biter & Alan Troyer have seen 464 species. 500 is surely in reach

I thought Olaf got off to a great start in 2016, and he did, but he ended January that year with 405, which could well have been a record at the time. Big Year strategies continue to evolve!
