I am also old enough to remember apprenticeships and other vocational training that is not, it seems supported by the authorities these days, mores the pity. If ever the electronic machine were to be maimed life will be very difficult indeed, people even write using a keyboard and as you have pointed out skill has been demoted progressively over the years since the 2WW.

Thanks for that Snel. Already some less expensive binoculars are built by robotics and these are not economic to repair. However, most binoculars and scopes are economically repairable. In particular quality instruments and the oldest models must be overhauled by experienced technicians. Tony
