Ringing near Gifford Winter 2013-14 (1 Viewer)

Straight into full swing at site 2 on Saturday. This is a wild bird cover site, with two or three feeders added last winter. The wild bird cover was almost non-existent last winter - absolutely typical locally following the dreadful summer - and we only ringed 47 birds in total. Our project aims to elucidate the value and reliability of different feeding strategies, making this valuable "lack of data".

Site 3 will not be used at all this winter due to problems with cats.

I've had some apparent success with orange and other citrus peel scattered around my feeding area. Haven't seen a cat for weeks, even though they are all over the village.
Hi John,

Glad you have cleared your garden. you are a wee bit out the village, this site is right next to houses and we have no control over the occupiers ! The nearest cottage is owned by the person who allows us to ring, and they like their tenant ...

Hope you are both well, Mike.

The goldfinch were down to feed but it was not safe to catch when a pheasant came along and chased all away. On the walk home I had c.15 yellowhammer in a hedge. Yesterday another hedge here held 200+ fieldfare.
