Hello,

I have observed that bird in Minas Gerai, end of february. It was soaring above the ridge of a hill at +/- 1500m.

Thanks

Adult dark morph Swainson's hawk, I think. Only other thing which might come close in the area is Harris Hawk but this has a very different tail (thick black/white bar), and should have clear orange underwing coverts [amongst other things].

This looks to me like a Variable Hawk (immature female) Geranoetus polyosoma (aka Red-backed Hawk Buteo polyosoma), on wing shape, colour and pattern, but this would be a rarity in Minas Gerais (and Brazil), so wait for more opinions!

EDIT: crossposted with THE FERN

I will be curious to see what this one turns out to be. Harris's H (Bay-winged) was a first wild idea, but I have no books here to check against.

No Harris's Hawk. But I think it would be worth making an analysis of Swainson's vs. Variable, which I don't have the time to do right now (obviously fully agree Swainson's is the most likely option...but...).

I've seen imm Black-chested Buzzard-eagles remarkably similar to this bird. Habitat and range fit fine. Any other pics available?
