Chaffinch with infected feet

Chaffinch with infected feet
This week in our garden (photo Liesbeth van Vliet, from our new hide for garden an woodland birds).

Neil Renwick commented us (thank you Neil):
Chaffinches are often seen with a parasitic condition known as bumble foot or a fungal attack called 'fur foot'. The infection is not directly fatal but it can cause a loss of agility and make the individual vulnerable to predators. Advanced infections can cause the loss of toes but there is evidence that the birds can recover naturally. I saw an image of a male chaffinch that had lost all his toes, yet the bird was clearly in good condition. Unfortunately, there is no way of treating wild birds even though there are treatments available for captive birds.

Extremadura Birding Trip Report

Our Extremadura birding tour was definately the best way to say hello to the spring and its Iberian birdlife. We went last week for a 3 day tour that covered wetlands, plains and, of course, the mountains and dehesas in Monfragüe National Park. The most remarkable species that we found were Spanish Imperial Eagle, Egyptian, Black and Griffon Vulture, Black and White Storks, Eagle Owl, Northern Harrier, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Red Kite. We could also see otter, red deer, wild boar and, of course, bulls. Not to mention the incredibly flowered landscapes of Extremadura and the rich local gastronomy... There is no doubt we will run birding tours in Extremadura from time to time.

Threats for Monfragüe

What years seems not possible, now the management of the Monfragüe N.P. will continue with its very bad plans for boat trips on the river Tagus, near the most famous and important breeding areas, Salto de Gitano.
See photo, showing the end of sustainable development of this area....

Birds of the Geopark and the North of Extremadura

Dipper, Almonte river
only to see in fast moving clear water, where it catches aquatic invertebrates. Common in the Geopark and la Vera, less frequent in the rest of Extremadura. Present all year round.

Beautiful he?

Little Ringed Plover doing well

Also breeding season for this small and unobtrusive runner (15 cm) with its wonderful yellow eye ring.
Present all year round on sandy shores of reservoirs and
larger drinking pools for livestock where it feeds on invertebrates. Here this week seen at the Ruecas Reservoir (Logrosán).

Steppe Birds – Collared Pratincole

This graceful and pretty noisy bird with a long swallow tail hunts insects on the vast steppes areas of Extremadura. Is not easy to find, but luckily during an excursion in La Serena we could spot this one at one of the water holes for livestock with some water left. Photo: Liesbeth van Vliet.

A great day in Extremadura last Fri 21st - Rollers displaying S of Santa Marta, and Montagu's Harriers; usual species at Penafalcon, Monfrague inc Black Storks, ST and Booted Eagle, Peregrine, Blue Rock Thrush, Red-rumped Swallow, with Alpine Swifts around the Tajo bridge; Bonelli's Eagle over R Almonte; obliging Bee-Eaters by a roadside gully W of Jaraicejo; 7 Heron spp at Arrocampo reservoir; flyby Hoopoes and many White Storks; very windy which made Warblers etc difficult. What a place for birds..........

More Bee-eaters this year

Bee-eaters give us always good feelings hearing them and seeing their fantastic colors in flight. Remarkable high number of these birds this year! (during an excursion with Stefan Verhoeven into the Geopark Villuercas)

Trying to make up my mind as to where to go next Easter, 2018. Not sure whether to go to Extremadura or somewhere close to Donana. Either way, would prefer to stay in a countryside cottage, near to a village or small town with restaurants/bars. Anyone got any suggestions?

Hi Rob,
ever been in Extremadura? For birds to spot here, see our website www.discover-extremadura.com
For a nice and fully equipped cottage which superb views over the Geopark area of Las Villuercas,
and not far from the most known birding areas, we can recommend LaBrizna in Cañamero.
No problem for us to make a reservation for you!

see you,
Henk

hides for bird photography

The number of hides is exploding in Spain.
What lacks is a sort of quality-mark: as a keen photographer you
really want to know if a hide offers good natural scenery, soft background,
clean floor and animals showing normal behaviour, so that
you can make the images you want.
Also important is that you are sure that a hide is not a zoo-like one where
the animals are bored and only waiting to be fed and where you are one of the to many paying visitors.....

The website www.hidesfotograficos.es offers a good overview of
what you can expect of hides in Spain.
Besides this, you can have a look on our own (renovated) hides on
www.extremadura-vogels.com

You can always ask me personal for more inside information about the Extremadura-hides if should you wish so.

hides for bird photography (2)

We live about 8 years now in Extremadura, Spain and always felt that mid-summer offers few birding opportunities.....but since we have our hide for woodland birds where almost every day a spectacular show is given, we can ‘bird’ whole year round.
Here: Golden Oriole, Hawfinch, Subalpine Warbler, Cirl Bunting.
(See also www.extremadura-vogels.com for more photos.)

Nevertheless we go on holiday to the Picos de Europa area in northern Spain….

Best wishes

Steppes Zorita and Alcollarín reservoir

Turned out these days as super birding locations. Last week we did 3 tours
into the planes of Zorita in combination with the Alcollarín waters.
Although the planes (steppes) are very dry, bird live is rich.
In the planes we saw Great Bustards, Stone Curlews, thousands of Wheatears, many Whinchats. Absolute fantastic were some Dotterels.

The wetland of Alcollarín surpised us with many Spoonbills (photo), Flamingo, Black Stork, Little Stints, Little Ringed Plovers, Ruffs, Redshanks, Greenshanks, Curlew, Stilts, Lapwings, Snipes, Ferruginous Pochards, many Great Crested and Little Grebes etc.

Raptors all over the place, Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, Sparrow Hawk, Booted Eagle, Short toed Eagle, Buzzard and Kestrel.

Always be welcome to join us!

Otter and Mangoose

Now almost all pools and mountain rivers are dried up (we suffer
the driest summer in 20 years), animals can be seen more
easily where is some water left. Like here in the Almonte river
in the Geopark Villuercas Ibores Jara, last week.
