Hi!

I am fairly new to Gulls,
and need a little help if you can,
which is much appreciated!

I am looking thru the Larsson book
"Gulls of Europe, Asia,and North America";
yet I am still having trouble ID-ing
whether this is a hybrid, and which winter.

Thanks for the help with this!

Probably a good idea! I'm pretty clueless about east Asian gulls (never been there) but given the pure white tails, I can't see any hard evidence for any Black-tailed parentage in there.

Thanks Nutcracker for the response !

I am not sure how to contact a moderator, i know double posting is a no-no.

The Gull's bill tip says Black-tailed, while the rest says Slaty-backed.
Slaty-backed have only a bit of red/orange on the bottom bill.
That is why I thought maybe a hybrid.....

Black on the bill tip is also a common sign of immaturity in large gulls. I'd hazard a guess it is a 3rd-4th year Slaty-backed, but with the proviso that's a species I have no experience of!

I can related to those signs even in a 60 year human such a i lol.

the detail observation is helpful, i will look and research more, and see if someone chimes in that might add to what you shared...

it is a slaty-backed gull allright (no hybrid). black on bill can be an immaturity sign in subadults but it happens also in basic (nonbreeding) plumage of large gulls.

Thank you so much for the confirmation.
I have ALOT to learn just about gulls alone.
Summer usually has just Slaty-backed and Black-tailed Gulls.
Winter starts to bring a half dozen or so more to Hokkaido.
