It seems that in Bull. Zoological Nomenclature 65 : 327-328 (ICZN 2008), there is a decision to change the name Streptopelia roseogrisea into S. risoria, which was applicable to the domestic form only.

Anybody to confirm ?

I had (probably mistakenly) understood that ICZN Opinion 2215 maintained priority for risoria (Linnaeus, 1758) over roseogrisea (Sundevall, 1857) both as the specific name, and as the subspecific name of the western subspecies.

But Svensson et al 2009 (Collins Bird Guide, 2nd Edition) includes an account (p414) for the form Streptopelia risoria roseogrisea, indicating that both risoria and roseogrisea are now valid subspecies.

Would a nomenclature guru please confirm that the latter position is correct.

risoria vs roseogrisea

Just to bring this topic up to date since ICZN Opinion 2215 (Dec 2008)...

Dickinson & Remsen 2013 (H&M4):
Streptopelia roseogrisea
Name not affected by Opinion 2215 (I.C.Z.N., 2008) unless the name risoria of disputed origin and in use for the domesticated Barbary Dove is considered a senior synonym of this wild African species.

In recent weeks, BOURC-TSC has followed AERC-TAC in recommending adoption of risoria, whilst IOC has now reverted to roseogrisea following H&M4.

Current status:
  • roseogrisea: H&M4, IOC, BirdLife, eBird/Clements, AOU-NACC, DBA

  • risoria: AERC-TAC, BOURC-TSC, TiF, Zoonomen
