Greater or Lesser Yellowlegs? Costa Rica, Isla Dama, 4/8, with Willet and Whimbrel for size reference. Thanks in advance!

Both yellowlegs are of roughty the same size and nearly as large as the Willet, both have long bills with a pale base, and both have thick tarso-metatarsal joints.

Yellowlegs are difficult to tell apart until you have positively identified both of them. If you are lucky you will see them both together and the difference jumps out at you. The lesser yellowlegs is slighter and the bill is a marginally shorter. I would say these are greater. Nice picture of a whimbrel and a willett too.

Lesser and greater yellowlegs

Not the world's best picture but here are the 2 together. In spite of the foreshortening effect you can see that the bird in the foreground (lesser) is slighter than the bird in the back (greater). Also appears to have a shorter bill. This was taken at Denare Beach, in northern Saskatchewan Canada.
