Birding near Angkor Wat (1 Viewer)

Sam Veasna Centre was top!

There are a couple of birds around the temple sites and some good options for day trips from Siem Reap, e.g. Ang Trapaeng Thmor, Prek Toal or the Florican site. See Sam Veasna Centre for more infos, and for arranging trips...

We had booked a combined bird/culture tour for late January through the Sam Veasna Centre, and we can fully recommend them. Our guide Mardy Sean proved to be very competent in all respects. On the first day, we visited three temple areas, including Angkor Wat, Ta Prom and Angkor Thom. For all of these, Mardy explained us many of the details and he knew where it was best to go when. On the second day we made a full day boat tour to Tonle Sap for birds (among much else, we had one Milky Stork in the distance that made us glad we brought additional scopes) but also to get some impressions of the floating villages. Again, Mardy was a great and very competent guide all day. On the third day, we originally had a leisure morning on the itinerary. But on the second day, we felt this was just a waste of our time and asked for alternate recommendations. Pretty soon, we decided to go to the florican steppes if possible (we had a return flight to Bangkok in mid afternoon). Mardy and the people at the Sam Veasna Centre managed to get everything organized for us. This meant a much earlier departure in the morning, box breakfasts, two 4 WD vehicles instead of our customary tour minibus, plus contacting local guides. Quite a feat in the short time. And it all worked out perfectly. Thus highest praise to the Sam Veasna Centre and Mardy Sean in all respects. No wonder these three days are among the best we had on our three and a half weeks trip (mostly to Thailand).
