Still on the hunt for a decent birding lens for my 350d. Can't afford a dear one as yet. Will this get me by? Or shall I definately go for a lower f?

No!

As far as I'm aware, this old lens will not be 're-chippable' to fit later Canon bodies.

Make sure you try it on your camera first before parting with any cash!
