Greece - Debris & Plastics (1 Viewer)

Early April experience - Mixed Feelings about Lake Kerkini & some other National parks in Eastern Greece: Debris, Plastic ,Information Panels burnt, broken, poorly accessible, closed non existing quality information at Info centers.
Does anybody have a clue on what is happening at these sites ? (Nestos, Evros, Limni Volvi, Kerkini, Koroneia, Kerkini).. is this still because of the economic turmoil ? Any recovery plans underway ?

Bottomline some great habitats / parks under threat by lack of funding / interests...or am I too pessimistic here ?

Hi Wim,
Conservation in Greece has always been well down the list and the economic situation has caused it to drop off several times. The Management Bodies in the National Parks have frequently gone six months without being paid and funding for other projects, including basic maintenance, has stopped. Staff are demoralised and, because most are on rolling contracts, have no guarantees about the future.
Times are hard there. The organisation Birdwing put a new term raft in place at Kerkini but, within weeks, all the wood was stolen leaving only the plastic barrels.
It’s still a great place to go birding though!
