We have introduced a category for Pelagic Trips into Opus. This is for trips that are arranged on a regular basis rather than one off trips. We need your help in this enterprise by letting us know where regular pelagics occur.

It would be nice if you could create a page in Opus but if you'd rather not then supply the info on this thread and we'll do the rest. Articles should be titled along the lines of "Cairns to Michaelmas Cay" rather than "Jim's Boat Trips"!

A page you start does not have to be completed right away or even by you, just having one or two sections would still make the page worthwhile.

These articles should not be in the form of an advertisement for the individual companies, but can include links/contact details in the relevant sections; if there's more than one company providing trips in the same area, links should be provided for all.

The basic template:

==Overview==
==Birds==
===Notable Species===
===Rarities===
===Check-list===
{{BirdsSee|}}
==Other Wildlife==
==Site Information==
===History and Use===
===Areas of Interest===
===Access and Facilities===
===Contact Details===
==External Links==
==Reviews==
(optional - please date)

Just copy/paste that into your new page and add:

[[Category:pelagic Trips]]

at the bottom, we'll add any other categories that may be applicable.

But presumably if one or two companies are better, the rest tosh, then that should be mentioned, yes? This would be more useful than simply listing all companies, no? A simple google search can reveal all companies that tap a trade, recommendations might put a birder on the best pelagic.

Well, not really, Jos.

Opus is not about advertising/recommending commercial activities. For this project it is to advise where Pelagic Trips occur, with information about what may be seen on them.

If, however, one company has an excellent reputation and has very knowledgeabe guides, versus other companies which simply see a potential market and try to undercut or replicate the birding pelagics, that does affect very much what may be seen on the trips.

Company a and company b might both go into the same waters, but it is the knowledge of the guides, plus whether they chum, know the underwater topography, etc, have suitable equipment/the will to find fishing trawlers, etc, that actually make the pelagic a good experience or not.

Would this not be useful? A link to a company that has poor guides or knowledge of the waters (and they do occur) is a poor service to birders, I'd say, especially if established companies of repute also operate.

But it's not my Opus.

It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
