Hi All

Has anyone heard a cuckoo sound like this. It was i our garden in France last year and returned this. I thought it might have had bird flu last year but it has returned, so maybe not

Cheers

Welcome to Birdforum JT !
I don't think it's that unusual to hear this 'half-strangled' Cuckoo call, I've certainly heard it in Southern England and also here in the Alps occasionally, from memory it's more often late in the season when they begin to stop calling rather than when they first arrive.

Whilst the call is unusual, a "sickly" bird would be unlikely to expend energy calling and engaging in territorial disputes with other males. Given that it's a returning bird would suggest to me it's healthy and survived the spring migration, to sing in its own dialect. May it return for many more seasons.

Old Cuckoo rhyme (anon, trad.) . . . [my emphasis]

In April I open my bill
In May I sing all day
In June I change my tune
In July away I fly
In August away I must
