American Woodcock (1 Viewer)

Hey all,
I was really excited to see a returning American Woodcock while riding on the trails. I feel like this is the only time I may see one, he (or she!) is so quick and yet, unafraid.
Really neat bird.
But I wonder.. why is it that I only ever see the one?

I can only imagine it is related to the habitat - it must be very small patch of habitat that you are riding through. If you were to go to a large, wet, overgrown field somewhere (at dusk, and wait) you'd be likely to turn up quite a few.

Mind you, they're never going to be that easy to see - they are very cryptic, and only really come out to display in the evening. I suspect I would be able to count the number of I've found during the day on the fingers of one hand. (In twenty years of looking!)

Peter C. is spot on, woodcocks are usually pretty hard to see most of the day, but get them when they are displaying and you won't be sorry!
