This update is for Tuesday, April 01, 2003

Eleven CEDAR WAXWINGS and two YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS seen at Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo.

One immature NORTHERN SHRIKE was sighted near the viewing tower at the Nanaimo River Estuary in south Nanaimo.

Seven GADWALL were seen on the marsh at Hemer Provincial Park. Twenty-one LESSER SCAUP were on Holden Lake in the Park.

Monday March 31:

100 to 200 AMERICAN WIGEONS were feeding on Fairwinds Golf Course in Nanoose Bay.

Ten RED CROSSBILLS, one FOX SPARROW, ten RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, three GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, four PURPLE FINCH, one COOPER’S HAWK and one TURKEY VULTURE were seen at McGregor Marsh, off Rutherford Road, in north Nanaimo.

At the bottom of Oar Road in lower Lantzville 7 HORNED GREBE, 1 RED-THROATED LOON and a large raft of PACIFIC LOONS were seen offshore.

12 BALD EAGLES and TURKEY VULTURES were seen in a field at Morris farm along Northwest Bay Road.

One GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET flew into a window along Norasea Road in Nanaimo and pick himself up a while later and flew away.

Eight GREATER YELLOWLEGS were seen at the Nanaimo River Estuary in south Nanaimo.

Sunday March 30:

The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS have arrived in Nanaimo. Two more sightings, one in the Stevenson Point area in Nanaimo and another coming to feeders along Garry Oaks Drive in Nanoose Bay.

Two YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and a PURPLE FINCH were reported along the 1300 block of Birchwood Road in Ladysmith.

The pair of OSPREYS have returned to their nest above Morden Colliery Dam in Nanaimo.

Saturday March 29:

Two WOOD DUCKS were seen on McGregor Marsh in north Nanaimo.

An ANNA’S HUMMINGBIRD was at feeders in the 4000 block of Jingle Pot Road in Nanaimo.

A myrtle race YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (white throated) was seen on Gabriola Island.

Friday March 21:

Three SAVANNAH SPARROWS were seen at the Nanaimo River Estuary in south Nanaimo.

Seen along Dix Road in north Nanaimo were: RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS, HOODED MERGANGERS, MALLARDS, RING-NECKED DUCKS, CANADA GEESE, RED-TAILED HAWK, COOPERS HAWK and a BELTED KINGFISHER.

Wednesday March 26:

Male and female NORTHERN PINTAIL were spotted at the Nanaimo River Estuary in south Nanaimo.


Tuesday March 25:

Seen at McGregor Marsh in north Nanaimo were YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and the first report of the season of ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS

A possible sighting of GOLDEN EAGLES has been reported over the water from the 3600 block of Dolphin Drive between the golf course and the marina in Nanoose Bay.
