I captured this one today as well. By the way these are my very first photos! Any help Charles?

Hi Ryan,
Looks like Phoenicurus auroreus, a male. Charles can tell you the subspecies. This one from Japan has that little white auricular patch not present in all auroreus.
 
I just looked up auroreus and it seems to have only two subspecies, i.e. the nominate auroreus and then leucopterus. I don't know if both range in Japan, and, if not, which one of the two does.
 
It's a male Daurian Redstart....................god only knows which subspecies. Whereabouts in Japan are you Ryan?

Ooops just saw "Sasebo" next to your avatar. Where is Sasebo then?
