My first thought was Gadwall but then I thought again and searched again and came up with nothing. Any ideas? It's a digiscope picture and a poor one I am afraid.

I think i would go for Gadwall too.
Did you see any white on it.

From my very limited knowledge it looks like Gadwall
Anas strepera to me.

OK. Then it was a Gadwall! The black beak was my first clue but when I looked at the head shading, that did not fit any of the pictures I could find. Thanks everyone. I don't remember any white.

Definately a Gadwall, the bird in the picture is a drake.
