Hi!

I live in Ontario not far from the north shore of lake Ontario in the middle of the bush by a small lake. As far as I can tell from the Merlin bird ID app we only get 4 woodpeckers here. But recently I've been getting one coming around that is similar looking to a pileated in every way except much smaller and also has an entirely red throat. I'm new to birding... Is this just a juvenile or something?

Thanks!

The only Woodpecker in your area with a red throat would be the Red-headed Woodpecker but smaller than a Pileated Woodpecker which does not have a red throat.

Hi there Charles and a warm welcome to you from those of us on staff here at BirdForum :t:
