recommended reserves east coast (1 Viewer)

Hi All

Novice birder with a keen 10 year old.

To break the boredom of his summer holidays, have promised to take him birding one day, stay in a B & B overnight then a day on the seaside weather permitting.

we are in the midlands so do not want hours in the car, was thinking the east coast, he could do with getting a few more waders and seabirds on his list,

Any sites/reserves you would recommend, not a million miles from a seaside town would be ideal.

Titchwell in Norfolk would be my suggestion, lovely reserve, lot's of good birds and a great beach at the far end of the reserve too.
You have the holiday destinations just down the road too.:t:

If you stay in Hunstanton you will have Titchwell, and the rest of the North Norfolk coast, one way and Snettisham the other, plus a good beach and a few seaside-y things on the doorstep. Getting there is straitforward, Leicester > Peterborough > Wisbech > Kings Lynne > Hunstanton.

Many thanks Guys, went up monday morning got to Tichwell around 12.

Had 5 hours on the reserve, my son picked up around 15 new ticks, highlights being spoonbill, marsh Harrier, and bearded tit.

Brillant reserve, then second day just spent around hunstanton doing seasidy things.

OK we are going off to Tichwell again in October half term, will be a bit cold for seaside so will do another reserve on the second day, any recommendations, would be appreciated

Wells, Wells Woods and Holkham should be of interest to him, and a variety of habitats too.

Before you get bogged down in Norfolk coastal traffic don't forget the Lincolnshire Wash Reserves. i.e. RSPB Frampton Marsh and Freiston Shore as well as Lincs Wildlife Trust Reserve Gibraltar Point. Far more birds than Titchwell can muster up!

Had two great days, took in Tichwell, Snettisham, Cley, Wells, and a few stops along the way

Highlights, Short Eared Owl, Marsh Harrier, Stonechat, Water Rail, Grey Plover, and Water Pipit (Brancaster Harbour)

Cant wait until the next one

Nice when someone takes the time to let the posters who gave suggestions know how they got on. Looks like a good trip. Maybe try Minsmere and surrounds next time ?

Just in case you're getting bored with E. Anglia ( Ho Ho Ho ← hollow laughter ) it's not that much further to the west coast. Check out http://www.deeestuary.co.uk/news.htm for the Wirral Wader Fest next month. Nip over to M6, off at J19 to Chester and A540 along The Wirral. You should be able to get views of roosting waders down to 10m over the high tide at Hoylake, Purple Sandpiper at New Brighton and see the Hen Harriers coming into roost at Parkgate on Saturday and have a cracking Sunday at Burton Mere Wetlands.
