Question Could it be a Twite?

Walking along the Kennet & Avon canal (through open countryside) in Wiltshire (UK) yesterday and saw a small brown/grey bird feeding on a seed head. It fits the description, in the two field guides I've looked at, of a Twite. However, neither guide indicates that the bird occurs in this area; does anybody know if it does?

Your mention of grey colours makes me think more of a Linnet, which can be quite dull sometimes. They have more of a grey tone to the head than Twite, which really aren't grey at all. Linnet would obviously be much more likely too.

Many thanks, Andrew. Linnets are quite common in the area but I discounted that really because of the subject's yellow bill.

Agreed, although I think we could do with a lot more detail on this bird in order to come to any firm conclusions.

here's a close up of a twite I took a couple of weeks ago. Was your bird anything like this?

Ken, many thanks for the photo; others for comments. Yes, my bird was the same as the pic - without any hint of colour (apart from brown & grey) so I'll go for twite over redpole. Thanks again to all.

Still struggling a bit with your bird looking grey. Look at Ken's picture - where is this Twite grey? They're a rare bird where you are. Still if you're happy with it being a Twite...
