Baird's Sandpiper (1 Viewer)

I accidentally created this but why not? What are the best strategies to identify a Baird's compared to a Western or Dunlin in non-breeding plumage?

For finding a Baird's, I think the first thing to look for is the very long wings which gives an elongated profile, the second is shorter legs, and the third is a relatively straight black bill. Thereafter, confirmation will come from plumage details, which you can find in a good field guide. Notice that the first item is shared between Baird's and White-rumped, but that they differ in the rump color which can be seen if the bird flies or preens.

Look also in the bird identification forum, and use the "search this forum" tab to search for threads with Baird's.
