Robin, but not long later, a heard only Green Woodpecker, just wouldn't fly over the valley to our side!

If I hadn't opened the door at the behest of someone on Twitter and heard House Sparrows, American Crow would have been my first bird today/this year.

I posted it in eBird and...got it wrong. So my first bird and 28th bird turn out to be the same. Will have to fix that first day. It was a merlin. Merlin today:

As per usual as I looked out of the kitchen window first thing the usual woodpigeons were sitting in the neighbours tree. I deliberately sat with a fixed gaze on my feeders in the hope that something else might show before I inevitably looked up into the trees. Oh well 5 out of 5 years now the woodpig.
Five minutes later as daylight broke fully, a Robin was hopping around on my patio closely followed by a dunnock and Blackbird. First to visit the feeders a few minutes later was a Great tit
