Picking up a bit

Friday had two new year birds at work:

65. Rock Dove/Pigeon.

Finally managed some real birding on Sunday at San Bernard NWR and Brazos Bend State Park:
66. Black-bellied Whistling Duck

Two sparrows

I was just complaining that almost the only sparrows I've seen this year have been Savannah when I saw three new 2009 species on my drive to work:

81. Harris's Sparrow
82. White-crowned Sparrow
83. Song Sparrow.

More birds at work

Saw two more birds at the college where I work:
84. Ring-billed Gull
85. Hermit Thrush.

I'm hoping to fit in a day at somewhere in our area that has ducks and geese. Then, at the start of February, I'll get in several hours of birding in San Francisco and Phoenix. I'm looking forward to seeing some western species in SF and some desert birds in Arizona.

Jeff

102. Ferral Pigeon
103. Spotted Redshank
104. Jack Snipe
105. Water Pipit
106. Short Eared Owl
107. Black tailed Godwit

January 17

Finally found a bit of open water on a nearby river - there's precious little of that about here these days! We're in a middle of a severe cold snap, even here in the 'deep south' of Canada. The (local) rivers are mostly frozen over, with just a few open stretches near mills and weirs. Still not much variety of waterfowl present, and amazingly, not one single gull! I suspect they've mostly moved down to the Great Lakes, and the Niagara River, until things start thawing out a bit.

The grebe was a nice surprise, they seldom overwinter here.

90. Pied-billed Grebe
91. Canada Goose
92. Mallard
93. Bufflehead
94. Common Goldeneye
95. Cooper’s Hawk
96. Hairy Woodpecker
97. American Tree Sparrow
98. Pine Siskin

Im currently on 126 so far this year, all in Kent, E Sussex and a trip in London/Essex border.
My Full list is on BUBO, or see my blog for some of the latest year ticks!

Leics and Britain 112
(Little Egret, Kingfisher and Tawny Owl added today)

WP and World 194

I am resisting driving more than a couple of miles for year-ticks this year - resisted a Leics Great White Egret today.

Everything just seemed to click today as I saw all my targets and then some. I added ten birds to my Year List, which is now up to 92.

83. Eurasian Collared Dove
84. Snow Goose
85. Greater White-fronted Goose
86. Merlin
87. Myrtle Warbler
88. Hermit Thrush
89. Red-breasted Nuthatch
90. Golden Eagle
91. American Coot
92. Brown-headed Cowbird

I was especially relieved to see the Hermit Thrush because, although relatively common, I dipped on it in 2007 and 2008.
