Two short Swedish etymologies (1 Viewer)

Björn Bergenholtz

(former alias "Calalp")
Sweden
Here´s two small (just fun-to-know) Etymologies … originating from Sweden:

crecca
● in the Teal Anas crecca LINNAEUS 1758
= from its Swedish name (still today!); Kricka and (earlier) Kräcka – most likely onomatopoetic from the interpretation "krick-krick" of its melodious and far-carrying whistle (by males, during winter and spring displays). The English interpretation of the same call is most often "prip-prip".

tornensis
● … the invalid "Corvus Tornensis" SPARRMAN 1806 [i. e. simply a leucistic Common Magpie Pica pica LINNAEUS 1758]
= the (at that time Swedish) Village Torneå (today's Tornio), in North-Western, Finland, on the border to Sweden.

On the Plate (attached) it clearly states "Corvus Tornensis" followed by "Torneå Skata" (= Torneå Magpie)

Enjoy!
