Moors Pool 0800 - 1230

Highlights:

Snipe (40) - mostly between the promontory and the watermark with 3 on the
back of the Broadmeadow Pool and 2 on the other side of the
lagoon. Difficult to count with most only viewable with a scope.
Doubtless more there. No Jack Snipe seen.

Curlew (11) - the whole wintering flock dropped in to Amy's Marsh during the
course of the morning. Also seen feeding on the A38 field
adjacent to the west track.

Lapwing (56)

Shelduck (5) - 3 down on yesterday's count of 8. None reported by Carl Jones
at the Flashes.

Pochard (1) - a drake. Yesterday's single bird was a female.

Shoveler (14) - a slight increase on yesterday's 11 birds.

Gadwall (6) - all on the Moors Pool today. None seen at the North Moors Pool.

Teal (28)
Tufted Duck (32)
Little Grebe (3)
Great Crested Grebe (1)

Mute Swan (7) - a group of 5 comprised of 3 adults and 2 1st winters flew in
before being seen off by the resident pair.

Little Egret (2)
Grey Heron (2)
Cormorant (16)

Pheasant (12) - 2 males and 10 females in front of the concrete hide.

Sparrowhawk (1)

Chiffchaff (1) - seen along the Salwarpe.

Coal Tit (1) - on feeders in front of the Jacobs Hide.

A flock of about 100 Goldfinch were seen along the Salwarpe but despite careful scrutiny by Carl Jones and myself no Redpoll or Siskin were found among them. Neither did we refind the Brambling that was seen in front of the concrete hide, which held good numbers of Greenfinch, a few Chaffinch and Reed Buntings. A Water Rail was also heard from the Jacobs Hide.

Jack Snipe at the Moors Pool as per Pete Lewis.

Thanks for that John much appreciated. I look at the forum everyday and would like to thank you and the team for all the good work that you do.
I will always remember the good times and many happy hours visiting the reserve.
Bitterns on the Moors including from the old North Moors hide in the channel. The long staying Osprey with Togs nearly coming to blows chasing it. The Wilson's Phalarope and the Dark Bellied Brent Geese which we found at the Flashes with no one else in the hide - no reporting facility then I'm afraid for us. It soon got round though when someone else arrived. Many interesting chats and information with the legendary Arthur J. and watching Des's hair grow.
Good luck to everyone and many happy hours birding a great reserve.

Lovely, kind words and we appreciate the likes of yourself and others who are the silent majority that motivates us to continue to improve the reserve...you've certainly seen some quality birds and it was nice to meet you over the many years that we knew each other.

Proof of the commitment by our volunteers was witnessed today. Not only the atrocious weather forecast but today's traffic chaos on the M5 and A38 didn't deter 25 of the Tuesday crew from turning up.

Today we completed the 2nd phase of our 'Grassland Project'....it included cutting the thick bramble patch in the southern end of the Lagoon...this was cut with 3 brush cutters at full pelt and then raked up. The southern shore of the lagoon is now connected to the remaining grassland. In time the cut bramble will become wet grassland and a wildflower meadow. The Worcestershire Wildlife Trust will be providing professional after care in varying forms..which includes the use of specialist mowing equipment.
The Broadeadow's southern bank was also cleared of its bramble which in time give us the opportunity of creating nesting holes for kingfisher and sand martin.

Thanks to all 25

Thanks Tony for the cakes:eat:

Next week Andy and Ellen are cake making:t:B :)

Birding the Moors Today

Only birded from 7.30 to 2.30 with Workparty in middle.

Some waterfowl species are increasing slightly but coot and gadwall are dropping rapidly.
The strong SSW winds meant that the majority of duck were tucked into the vegetated southern shores of the various water bodies ie scrape, Broadmeadow pool, Lagoon and Sw marsh. The work party pushed the birds into the open making for easier counting. There wete plenty of snipe scattered all over the place. The female type Stonechat perched on reed mace next to where we were working but generally passerings were keeping a low profile.

Species count MOORS:
Little grebe 3. Cormorant 16. Greylag 2. Mute swan 7 (5 dropped in for a brief stay), grey heron 2.
Shoveler 23. Gadwall 2. Teal 35+. Shelduck 7. Tufted 38. Pochard male.
Coot 10ish ,
Snipe 75+. Curlew 8. Lapwing c80.
BHG 600. Herring 6. LBBG 5.
Raven pair hanging around Lifestyles. Collared dove 2. Stock dove 1. Great sp woodp.
Mistle thrush 2. Redwing 4. Song thrush 4 singing.
Stonechat. Starling 12.
Cetti's w singing 3. Bullfinch. Chaffinch 3. Goldfinch 60+

Feeding Station west side greenfinch 10+. Reed bunting. Blue tit 25+. Plus long tailed tit 15

From the Flashes this morning Andy P reports:
