Please excuse my ignorance but can anyone tell me what this is? Found on my living room wall in Surrey back in early August. An inch or so long.

The scientific name (´Latin´) is also very apt. It rought translates as written with a gamma mark, referring to the silvery y-shaped mark on the forewing.
