Gimbal and/or Fork Mounts? (1 Viewer)

Currently I use a 100mm Pentax spotter (9 pounds with ep) on a Bogen 3246 tripod with a Bogen 3047 head. I use this outfit only for long distance high power (60x plus) scanning and never far from my car.

This outfit works ok but not great. Poor balance and head will not tilt up more than 30 degrees. Tried a Bogen 501 head but still was not able to perfectly balance the scope as well as movement not really all that smooth. My over-all impression was that the 501 was at it's limits trying to control the 100mm.

So I thought of trying The 393 Long Lens Tripod Head ( aka Bogen 3421 )

Anyone have experience with this type of mount for a big scope?

Thanks,
