Taiga Flycatcher - 4th for Britain & 1st for Cornwall

The details as I've heard them:

Watched from 4pm on Friday at Tregeseal nr. St. Just. Photographed, and identity apparently confirmed by photos. Searched for yesterday unsuccessfully, but lousy weather and not enough people looking.

Looks like another one that has slipped through the fingers for most of us. What a weird autumn for Cornwall. On paper the list of good birds that there's been - or might have been - would suggest a vintage year, but in practice, is there anyone who has seen more than two (that count!) from this list?

Black-browed Albatross
Little Shearwater
Fea's Petrel
Fea's Petrel
Fea's Petrel
Madeiran Petrel
Madeiran Petrel
Little Swift?
OBP (It's a mega for Cornwall)
Booted/Syke's Warbler
Green Warbler?
Taiga Flycatcher
Brown Shrike?
Rustic Bunting (Another mega for Cornwall)

At this rate I'll have to resort to ticking the Ruddy Shelduck!

Nice!

Got over this morning ourselves, afraid when I tried to get any images it would dive by the time i'd found it in the scope, the time it chose to have a proper preen, and a stretch, was in the middle of a squally shower.... otherwise I was just enjoying it. ;)

Firstly apologies to everyone for the delay in replying, but unsurprisingly I was busy in October birding. However with the dark nights and wet and windy days I have more time for more trivial matters. So let’s get down to business and go through Paul’s latest set of nonsense.

“I know lots you dont.”

I’m sure you do Paul, but you have very conveniently not answered my question so I will ask you again. On what basis have you written that the Wilson’s Petrel at Pendeen on 20/8/09 came through early morning? While you are at it perhaps you could explain why you have written on your site that the Rustic Bunting seen at Land’s End this September was only a probable?

“The offer of the Pelagic was for next year, if you read the post properly you would have known that. All of the Pelagics this year were full apart from the final one when i needed two others for a full boat.”

As always you have missed the point I know you wrote for next year. I was pointing out that it was only after my last post that you invited me, (despite having contacted most other birders in Penwith and beyond), highlighting your pettiness. On top of that you still had places left on the remaining trips at the time, (even if you filled them later), that you could have invited me on, but saw fit not to. So my comments still stand and your one and only attempt to counter anything I have said is false. I assume that you accept all my other comments, as you have been unable to find anything I have said is untrue.

“I also do the Isles of Scilly Bird Group website Dave. How come you don't analyse and slag that in the same way?? That in itself just proves you have some personal vendetta.”

Your perverse logic is astounding! If I had a personal vendetta against you, believe me, I would hound you from pillar to post and leave no stone unturned. I’m sure the IOSBG website would provide equally rich pickings should I bother to look, but the simple truth of the matter is, I live in Cornwall not the Isles of Scilly. I have no real interest in birds over there and consequently have rarely felt the need to look at the website. The only time I have visited was to look at the video footage of the Albatross to check the ageing.

“You are obviously still using the website along with the other 12,000 visitors per month.”

The number of hits does not necessarily equate to a good site. I’m sure (although I have no personal experience) that many porn sites get far more hits than that! Remember Teletubbies say Eh-oh? It was No. 1 in the charts in1997selling two million copies becoming the 40th best selling single in the UK.
Undeniably successful, undeniably rubbish.

And just to prove your site contains rubbish, you still haven’t learnt how separate goosanders from mergansers judging by your report of a bird off Penzance on Nov 20th! A case of Groundhog Day yet again.

Look forward to your next instalment.

Dave Parker

PS. Good to see that you have learnt some manners and actually answered my greeting when we met at Land’s End. However that still leaves you with a four out of seven record of behaving amorally/questionably when I have met you in the field and that’s laying aside your staggeringly hypocritical antics on the web!

Possibly time? Time for this to enjoy it's own thread or something?? .....

eg "Friendly Cornwall Birding Discussion Thread" or similar...

( And good birding to all )

It's time for the conflicting parties to take this off of our site and do it somewhere else. A lot of people are getting sick of this tedious nonsense spoiling an otherwise friendly thread.
Do it via pm or do it elsewhere, but it now stops as far as the forums on here go.
Thanks,
Andy

~20 balearic shearwater
2 manx shearwater
5 grey phalarope
4 great skua
2 puffin
~5 little auk
1 common tern
1 leach's storm petrel
tons of guillemot, kittiwake, razorbill, fulmar, gannet etc

all at Pendeen this morning, not a bad haul, plus grey phal and balearic were lifers :D

St Ives Island today

Totals for the day included 28 Grey Phalarope, 7 Little Auk, 1 Arctic Skua (ad), 1 Arctic Tern, 1 Common Tern, 3 Red-throated Diver, several Great Northern Diver, 1 Manx Shearwater, 3 Balearic Shearwater, 3 Little Gull (all ads.), 1 Leach's Petrel, 130+ Common Scoter (mostly imms/females). 100's Auks, 100's Kittiwakes.

Given the gale force NW wind, we were expecting more than one Leach's Petrel today, especially that 600+ were seen at Portland today !

The images below were taken today at St Ives.

Thor Veen, Will Jones (aka Jacana) & myself had similar luck from Pendeen this morning:

http://piratebirding.blogspot.com/2009/11/after-last-nights-storm-tremough.html

A few of your Phalaropes went missing (or did we just miss them?) , we missed the Artic Tern, our Arctic Skua was a dark phase and we had a few more shearwaters and a couple of puffins. Still nice to see such a close match, suggesting a lot of stuff tracked the coast.

Edit: sorry - just seen you beat me to it Will!
