Osprey catching two fish in one dive — one in each talon (1 Viewer)

Although I know for long time about a handful of photos were taken that are showing Osprey with a double catch I never was lucky to witness it, not to mention get photos of this impressive event. Have to admit that for a long time I wanted to have an opportunity to see it, and of course get a photo. As time went by and in many years no Osprey wanted to show its skills in the front of me I stopped thinking about it. Then finally here we are: the juvenile did put a show right in the front of me and came out of water with two striped mullets, one in each talon.

A few more shots showing the juvie transporting both mullets in mid-air.

Shaking wet plumage but firmly holding the double prey

Juvie got some attention from Laughing Gulls that wanted a piece of pie (mullets did not seem to be impress by any one of the predators) - juvie shown no interest to share and ignored gulls.

Hope at least a few of you will enjoy looking at these photos.

BTW I know that there is a better chance to see event like this than to get a photos of it (pure luck - to be in the right place at the right time) so I would like to hear from anybody who witnessed Osprey double catch. Just to have an idea how often this might happen.

All the best,

Mark

Amazing! I never knew they could do that... must keep a better eye on fishing Ospreys from now on! :)

Those are some incredible photos! Thank you for sharing - I enjoyed them very much. And so heartwarming to see a juvenile osprey thriving and putting to good use the skills his father taught him!

Wow, Mark! those are amazing photos. Must have been quite a sight to see let alone get such great shots.

Do me a favour. I see the links and everyone congratulating you on the images. Unfortunately my (US-based) corporate firewall doesn't let me anywhere near sites such as pbase, flicker and other depositories. Could you please post a reduced version into this thread so that I (and presumably others) can have a shuftie at 'em?

Thanks

Simon,

I am away from home for a few days so I will try copy one image from the pbase and upload it here

All the best,

Mark

Technical question

Wonderful photos ...

What kind of camera and telescope do you use ? I never saw such results ...

Again, thanks all for your comments. SaxCat: Canon 7D, 500mm f4 + 1.4X but you have to join Ospreys in the water to get close. This year is easy, water level is low; two years ago had to wait for them in waist deep water :)

Quite sure

I was quite sure that you were close to the ospreys.

I saw a similar setup this summer at Loch of Lowes, and the photos had not such details as, for example, your photos of the feeding.
