New Ultravids coming (1 Viewer)

So Tom,

As per all the great opportunities listed in posts above ... (Habicht, 8x42BL, Swaro EL) ...

... how are you leaning at this point? And ... Why?

Robert / Seattle

Hello, Mr. Agent Fluffy Bunny!*
Summing up you highly instructive and enthusiastic first-hands reports on the relative merits of the different models, I am leaning towards the following strategy that I have painfully worked out in long, sleepless nights:

1: Roam the unlit backstreets of the poorest quarter of a major city. Seek out a man in a pink Cadillac with leopard skin seat covers who wares sunglasses at 2 am .... and buy a used gun.
2: Use used gun to rob a bank to provide myself with the money necessary to buy ALL OF THEM!
3: After getting out of the bank, run and hide, as Agent Fluffy Bunny will be on my trails.
4: Look around for Agent Fluffy Bunny through that pair of cheap binos that sit in your closet right now.

Got that right?!

*or whatever this week's undercover name might be (I assume they are changed on a weekly basis?)

More though other channels soon,
Elmar Fudd (waiting for the Bunny!)

Dear Mr. Fudd,

There's good news and bad news. First the bad news. It seems that Mr Bunny appears to be missing. He was last seen during a submarine tour of Lake Geneva with a certain Mayor's daughter on his arm. Not realizing, or at least not caring, that the mystery woman was recently married to a wealthy optics merchant, the Swiss morality striker brigade was quick to set their sights on this "Bonnie and Clyde" of the Alps. They narrowly escaped, though, - alledgedly in a pink Cadillac later found abandoned at the Gregor Mendel Genetics Resort and Casino. They had succeeded, however, in sending me a coded message, which leads me to the "good news":

The message read "Titanium alloy trinket with shinny parts still at headquarters, being held for Special Agent Fudd, who will use "alternative channels" as known".

Hmmm. Very intriguing. I trust you know what this means. (Ahem, wink wink).

Sincerely,
Mr C. Barrow, at large

I spoke to a dealer in Norfolk a couple of weeks ago , he said he understood they would not be released until November and he wasn't holding his breath . He also advised that the new scopes would not be around until the next 'Birdfair '. We both agreed it seemed strange marketing strategy to whet the market appetite and then not deliver the goods to that market on time . I took the time to also check out Zeiss 8 x 32 fl's as we were chatting .

Latest expectations for the HD binos are now the second or third week of November to Leica dealers in the the UK, just in time for those last minute Christmas pressies.

A Leica rep told me last weekend that they aren't due in the U.S. until at least January.

The much-needed improvement to the focus mechanism will consist of a ceramic "clutch" added to the old belt system.

Steve,

Would you be able to ask your Leica rep. if they are going to change the Passport warranty for US products?

I called Eagle Optics to see if they knew when the 7x42 HDs will be arriving. They didn’t know for sure but thought it would be next month (Jan. '08). I was then told that there is a possibility that they may be reducing the warrantee period from Lifetime to 10 years for the HD line. I would assume that this would be a change for all new products but they couldn’t elaborate.

Mike

I have just found out that these HD models will be visible at a birdshow in december in belgium, the shows that where in aug and until now, that were old ultravids were they printed HD in . !!!! I heard that from a reliable person.

The HD's are in the B&H winter catalogue, $1895. -- $2345. USD.

Mike

Mike,

Yes, it's true. But they say "Accepting Orders" (i.e., "Backordered") on the website order form. They are, in fact, my supplier for a pre-ordered 10x32 HD and from whom I recently received the predicted delivery date of "about two months" (i.e., late January/early February).

Sigh. In time for Valentines Day, anyway.

i have seen on a buying site that the 10x42 BL version en 8x42 BL are now with HD lenses en improved focussing , is this true , i tought they changed nothing on the BL's

I had the chance to look through the 10x32 HD model at my local shop and was surprised that the improved focus wheel issue had not fully been addressed.

The small amount of play that drives some users mad is still present with the ability to be able to rock the wheel back and forth without altering the focus. It was nice and smooth in operation but did not feel much different to my non HD Ultravids.

I have to say that whilst the play is apparent in all the leica bins I have used inc Trinovid it really does not bother me but I bet new threads on this will be long on this issue when more people receive their bins
