probably been done before but worth a go
painted pony's post about a butcherbird coming in house to say g'day reminded me of my 35 happy yrs in Oz.
I had a gf staying with me took a walk with my big black dog down the paddock while some other UK visitors and I had a beer, as you do, in the shade of the verandah. I went in to get some more beers but ran out when my UK mates called me hysterically. I thought 'snake' and grabbed a stick. Melanie had just run back shocked and breathless and almost speechless.
She had sat down for a rest under a shady cherryoak when an eagle struck at the dog just feet away which went somersaulting and jumped up barking as a second eight foot wingspan wedgetail came in at it, and then six australian magpies mobbing them! For a little Pommie shiela it was all a bit much but a beer soon calmed her down.
The others saw it happen and they all got the story of a lifetime but I missed all the action. Mind you I saw wedgies take rabbits and once a snake in the same paddock, and a couple of times saw a swoop at the dog but usually by juveniles probably having a go for fun.
