objective lens replacement. (1 Viewer)

Hello forum.
Heres a question for you.

If an alpha binocular has an objective lens replaced due to damage etc, assuming the replacement would be of a lens using the latest coatings, would the left and right views be different to be noticeable or not ...?

No. You won't notice the difference. The AR coatings only loose a tiny fraction of the light (0.2% or less per surface) so even small differences between the coatings would be even small than that. You can't see differences that small.

Hello Ingle1970,

Why would the replacement be one with the latest coatings? The firm might have older spares.

Happy bird watching,

But is not the continual updating of coatings to give incremental benefits of a slightly sharper image or a more contrasty image etc.

I would guess you would see a difference through the "individual" tube, but not with both eyes open as you would expect your brain to mix both images to get the best result.

It's probably not a good idea to make any assumptions about how the replacement lens will be configured and how closely it will match the original. Because the lens will likely come from the manufacturer my recommendation would be to pose your question to the parts or repair department.

I think Kevin's point is that changing only 2 of about 16 multi-coated surfaces won't make enough difference to see. The change in light transmission would be no more than a fraction of 1%.
