Hello and a question (1 Viewer)

Hello,
I am new to the forum and am hoping someone can help me with a unique need.
I am looking for someone who has a Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM lens. I need to do a foam insert cutout for a shipping case that I am giving to a friend for his birthday. I do not have this model lens. If anyone has one and would be wiling to do a "footprint" on paper of the lens or shoot a perpendicular photo of it with the lens shade attached I would greatly appreciate it. It would also be rather helpful if a ruler or tape measure could be laid down in the lenght and width of the lens. This will help for making the cutout. Hope someone can help out. Erin

Hi Erin,

I have one of these lenses.
Don't forget the substantial tripod mount. It's normal when travelling, for the lens hood, about 8.5" - 9" long, to be reversed on the front end of the lens. That reduces the overall size significantly. The lens is also supplied with a soft slip-on lens cover (artificial leather?) which has a drawstring to help keep it in place. This covers the front of the lens, and the length of the hood. It is not supplied with a flat lens cap as supplied on shorter length lenses.

I could supply photographs for you. but not until I return home in two days time.

Thx and good points.

Yes, if you could please take a good pic of the lens with the tripod mount showing and the lens shade mounted in reverse (as for transporting) w/o the leather bag/cap...I would greatly appreciate it. Please include a couple rulers for scaling size. Your a BIG help here!

Hi Erin,

Here's links to 9 images uploaded to my Dropbox account.

Sorry, I've only got one tape measure in INCHES! The red plastic case adds 6cm (~2.36").

I hope these provide the info you need - best of luck. Get back to me if there's some critical dimension which isn't clear enough.

It's perhaps worth mentioning that in the Flipside 300 case, there's not only space for the lens but also my Canon 1.4x and 2x extenders. I also have the Flipside 400AW, and that is a different concept altogether - with lots of pockets, stiffeners and a rain-cover etc. It's a nice case, but it doesn't take my EF 500 F/4L IS.
