For your avatar you will need to sort out a small picture (can't remember the size off-hand) and save it to your desk-top (at least that's what I do when uploading pictures as it makes it easy to find them.
To upload go into your Control Panel, which you will find a link for at the top right of every page. Then look for Edit Signature and Edit Avatar in the left hand pane and follow the on-screen instructions.
Don't forget to click on Save when you've done each of them.
