Woodpecker mates (1 Viewer)

We have a red bellied woodpecker, affectionately called Woody, who has been in a few of my posts. I never see him or the downy who lived in the same tree, flying with a mate. My question is, are woodpeckers generally on their own until mating season or is the mate elsewhere? Please forgive me ..I'm very new to birding..

That's right, the pair breaks up after the breeding season--
