I was brought up to identify bats on the spot using heterodyne. Sweeping the dial, getting the peak frequency, listening to the tone of the call etc.
Nowadays, my newer bat detector has heterodyne. It almost seems like an add on. The triggering function is covered by FD for the whole range; and the FD, with the peak frequency automatically displayed, seems to give me just about everything I need to identify a bat in the field in terms of echolocation speed etc. Without having to turn any dial.
Looking at the very latest detector models, it seems to be FD, graphical displays, TE, and full spectrum recordings.
Is heterodyne now considered obsolete?
