Tripod for 100-400 Lens (1 Viewer)

I need a tripod for my Canon with 100-400 lens. My search has been mind boggling! Would a Manfrotto 055xprob tripod or 055XV be up to the job? It will also be used for a 100mm scope. I will also want it for video use. I have been looking at the Manfrotto 701HDV Video Head to go with the set up. Am I about there or is it back to the drawing board?

Hi,

It may be obvious, but just to make sure - the manfrotto 055 series are significantly taller than the 190 series. Very similar otherwise. Consider your height, and whether your scope is straight or angled when making a selection. In general though, I would think the 055's would handle the job.

Enjoy.

Thanks for that. 5ft 9" I am!!!! and I'm angled!!! Lol

I find the 701 HDV to be a pretty good head for my scope but I have never tried it with a camera and lens, though I think it would be OK for a 100-400 and a non 1 series body'
I used to own a Manfrotto 55 and, for the money, it is pretty good if a bit heavy. My current choice for scopes and lenses up to a 300 F2.8 is the Gitzo GT2531. I know it is a lot dearer but it is far superior in every way and, if you can stretch your budget, you will be using it for a VERY long time.
