ED50 monopod set up / protective cap (1 Viewer)

Hi,
first a short question: I eventually lost the objective cover of my Nikon ED50. Is that a standard size used in cameras and easy to find in a camera shop, or rather sth. specific to the ED50 scope and thus probably difficult to find?
Thanks for help on that...

Then I wanted to let you know about the perfect (for me that is) ED50 set up that I have found now. Inspired by some enthusiastic reports on the Monostat (a monopod with a funny rubbercap on the foot which prevents trembling) I bought one. The whole looks like this:
- Monostat RS16K ART
- Manfrotto RC234 head
- ED50 with a 27 WA eyepiece
- Grippa hand-hold case (which gives a little protection and allows a wonderfull grip of the whole thing; however a longer screw was needed to fix the scope with the case on to the plate)
- the phantastic aiming device described here in bf.

The Monostat really works, unbelievable the difference that little rubber-foot makes, I can hold 27x perfectly well. The whole set-up is so light and flexible. I carry it either fixed to the outside of the backpack, or with a strap over the sholder. It is set up real quick, much faster than with the tripod.
I was hiking in the mountains recently and had the scope with me all the time, before I never even thought about taking the scope along...
Lighter, quicker, perfect!

The downside is that the purchase of a 80mm scope to which I have been looking forward has been postponed for a good while now. Just can't imagine to lug such a thing around ...

Florian,

I just wanted to chime in and support the use of this scope on a monopod. I have used a similar set-up many times while traveling South America. Thanks for sharing your information.

Florian, I have just had a look at the Monostat range of monopods. Which one do you use? Is is aluminium or carbon fibre and how many sections is it?

Quick calculations suggest that the entire set-up of scope, eyepiece, monopod and head weighs in the region of 1450-1550g (depending on which monopod is used.) Does this sound about right?

It is quite an interesting solution to supporting the ED50 and one which I might investigate further.

Hi Ron,

I just put the thing on the scale, it's 1575g, including the grippa-case and a strap.

Attached a snapshot. The monopod is the Monostat RS16K ART, 4 sections aluminium.

Thanks Florian. My estimate of the weight wasn't too far out! I didn't allow for the grippa-case though. It's a lot lighter than my present tripod and is worth thinking about.

Hi Ron,
yes lighter and also more flexible, it's so easy to be attached to the outside of a rucksack and very comfortable to be carried then, and very quick to get it off and be on the bird. Way better than a tripod. And the image is really steady, almost as with the tripod. Did not really believe that before, with a normal monopod there was always way too much shaking. So very glad I tried it, thanks to reports like this one here: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=202523
