Where's the Small Tortoiseshell?

Has anyone else noted how scarce Small Tortoiseshells are this year. In my area they are normall the commonest butterfly as well as Small White, but I've only seen two or three all year. A good year for the white spp. though.

There's no shortage of them around my area of north Durham, I must have seen 30 or more today, on Buddlia's in my small village, not counting two specimens that have taken up hibernating residence in my bedroom.

I've not seen many, and not many Red Admirals or Painted Ladies either.

Just got back from a holiday in Gascony, France, and didn't see many there either. Plenty of Silver-washed Fritillaries though, and Small Heaths by the truck-load.
