New World screech owls (1 Viewer)

Chocó Screech Owl

Am I right in saying that it looks like Dantas, Weckstein, Bates, Krabbe, Cadena, Robbins, Valderrama & Aleixo resolved much of the M. guatemalae-vermiculatus complex but left out and/or forgot Choco Screech Owl M. centralis like some others before them?
Dantas et al certainly make no mention of centralis. However their sample of vermiculatus is from the Achiote Road, Panama – possibly within the presumed range of centralis...?

[IOC recognises Megascops centralis as a distinct monotypic species; eBird/Clements recognises centralis as a valid subspecies (and distinctive monotypic ssp group) of M guatemalae sl; whilst König & Weick 2008, H&M4 and Holt et al 2015 (HBW Alive) treat centralis as a synonym of vermiculatus.]

AOU-SACC...
2. ... Genetic data (Dantas et al. 2015) indicate that Megascops includes three major clades, one of which includes M. albogularis, M. choliba, and M. koepckeae, and another of which includes all other South American species. SACC proposal needed to modify linear sequence.

2b. ... Dantas et al. (2015) found that M. roboratus (as represented by subspecies pacificus) was more closely related to M. watsonii. SACC proposal needed to modify linear sequence.

3. Megascops koepckeae was originally described as a subspecies of M. choliba... ...they are sister taxa (Dantas et al. 2015).

6. ... Dantas et al. (2015), however, found that the sister taxon to M. marshalli was M. hoyi, with M. petersoni sister to that pair. SACC proposal needed to modify linear sequence.

7. ... Dantas et al. (2015) found that M. watsonii was paraphyletic with respect to M. sanctaecatarinae and that the subspecies usta itself is a paraphyletic taxon.

7a. ... Dantas et al. (2015) found that M. atricapilla and M. watsonii (represented by usta) are sisters.

8a. ... Dantas et al. (2015) found that M. atricapilla and M. sanctaecatarinae are not sisters, and that neither one is part of the guatemalae- vermiculatus complex. SACC proposal needed to modify linear sequence.

Proposal (770) to SACC

Treat Megascops colombianus as a subspecies of M. ingens

Proposal (771) to SACC

Break up Megascops guatemalae into several species (II)

A. Recognize M. centralis as a separate species

B. Recognize M. roraimae group as a separate species

With proposal 771, SACC would finally be catching up, more or less, with the consensus already in place in the major taxonomies.

IOC already splits off guatemalae and divides the rest into four species, namely vermiculatus, centralis, roraimae. and napensis.

Clements has five "distinctive groups" which are the same as IOC's species.

Howard and Moore 4 is the same as Clements except that it lumps vermiculatus and centralis into one group.

Finally HBW splits guatemalae and vermiculatus as species, and within vermiculatus it has three subspecies groups which also lump vermiculatus and centralis into one group.

So proposal 771 would match the IOC version, except that it would lump roraimae and napensis into one species.

Megascops napensis, M. colombianus

IOC Updates Diary May 15

Lump Colombian Screech Owl with Rufescent Screech Owl
(Species status of Colombian Screech Owl Megascops colombianus re M. ingens has been uncertain (Ridgely & Greenfield 2001, H&M, BLI, and SACC). Genetics and vocals support this lump (Krabbe 2017). SACC 770)

Lump Napo Screech Owl with Roraiman Screech Owl, now Foothill Screech Owl
(Lump Napo Screech Owl and Roraiman Screech Owl as M. roraimae, which has precedence (Krabbe 2017). ENG to Foothill Screech Owl. SACC 771)

Sorry for double/triple posting, but Megascops isssues seems to be present in a multitude of threads (also in fairly recent ones) here in the Bird Taxonomy and Nomenclature Forum ... no wonder; Screech-owl Taxonomy is a tricky thing.

However; does anyone know the answer to my latest question; here?

If so; please answer in that thread.

Grateful for any help!

Björn
