EDG Vibration Reduction Scope (1 Viewer)

A prototype of a Vibration Reduction (VR), EDG scope was in a case at the Birdfair.

In common with much of the Nikon stand there was no information about it whatsoever.

They didn't mind me taking a photo of it on my phone.

could be good on a seawatch!

Steve, because of the earthquake the Tokyo bird fair was cancelled. After seeing this I checked around on the Japanese forums and could find no references either.

No matter as I think Nikon lost its way with the EDG series scopes and adding VR is another step in the wrong direction. Folks expect "lighter, smaller, cheaper" NOT "heavier, larger, more expensive."

I would like to see Nikon build the DSLR attachment inside the scope without adding extra length so it would have 2 helicol ring for focusing and zooming from 500mm f5.6 - 1750mm f21 with exact EXIF data plus the VR. Means the objective lens would be 88mm or more hehehe

There is a reason why ED series scopes is not discountinued because it is targetting different market. ED series is good with compact camera for Digiscoping and EDG series mainly for advance Digiscoping with DSLR rather than using lens and eyepiece with DSLR for Digiscoping.

Yes, Nikon certainly has the know-how to make such a superzoom lens. I think Kowa made a good effort to meet the needs of "birders" who are more interested in photography/digiscoping than visual use with its photoscope. It's what Nikon should have done/should do, only better.

Both has the same concept I understand.

Time to dump all 3 of my family's Nikon scopes for this baby! :king:

Anyway, I'm curious on the possible effects of the VR breaking down. Will the scope's optical quality be comproimised? And I agree with Jason that it will be a great idea for internal zooms for DSLR attachments as the FSA-L2 is a very long and potentially unwieldy piece of equipment. Putting AF in will be cool too! :t:

I was made aware of this new possibility of a VR EDG Fieldscope a while ago, but have not seen it in the states yet. I will look for more information and report back if I can find any. Great topic for the post and I am sure we will have more info in the coming future. Thanks so much!

It was also reported today on Nikon rumors.....
I was shocked to see what the camera adapter costs though...$900.- yikes.

¡Ay, caramba! Adds another 400g + 4 AA batteries to the already stout weight.

MSRP of JPY¥441,000 for the angled including zoom vs. JPY¥309,000 for original EDG. Discounts off the MSRP typically run ~20% here. Still, ~USD$4,500 is alot of cabbage!

Real "magnification" has nothing to do with a camera. Perhaps you mean the "effective 35mm focal length"? That really depends on the lens compatibility with the eyepiece. I suspect the Nikon 1 kit zoom will only work the EDG LER eyepiece. I suppose the new F-mount adpater would let you use the FSA-L2 but the problem with this method is even with a DX camera you have to use ISO3200 for all but the best light so sensor noise becomes a real problem. A D3s would be the best choice for this method but then you are looking at some serious weight/money and I believe the adapter vignettes with a full frame camera.

Need to zoom to 750mm on the FSA-L2 to removed vignetting on FX cameras and I never shoot in 3200 ISO even in the rainforest. i got good image at maximum 1750mm on ISO 400 :king:

Jason, in my experinece with the D300s low ISO <ISO800 is possible at slower shutter speeds less than 1/800sec. Shoot any higher ISO on the D300s and noise becomes harder to deal with if you are printing/cropping.

Sure you can get good pics at low ISO/slow shutter speed but you will always be fighting mechnical vibrations, especially mirror slap, and bird movement during the "goldern hours" of early morning/late afternoon. At these focal lengths on a DX camera and with moving/feeding birds 1/800sec is really the minimum and that usually means ISO1600-3200 all the time.

Yes, I'm trying to find out if these would be good with the Nikon 1. It has a 2.7 multiplier factor compared to FX and of course no mirror = no mirror bounce and these scopes have built in VR, so it seems like a good combination on paper.

Will update if Nikon Malaysia have demo unit for next week Borneo Bird Festival hehehe :king:
